The name spinel is derived from the Latin 'spina' or thorn thought to be called such due to its pointy crystal shape. Spinel can occur in many colours and has been mistaken throughout history for other precious gems. The Black Prince's Ruby in the British Crown Jewel collection is in fact a red spinel.
